Shock Wave Therapy

What is shock wave therapy?

Shock wave therapy is a non-invasive drug-free treatment that is proven to relieve pain, promote healing, and increase mobility. This method is still relatively new for companion animals, and has been used for equine therapy since 1999. Veterinary Specialists of Greater New Orleans is pleased to offer this advanced technology for our patients in the New Orleans, Metairie, Kenner, Jefferson, and the southeast Louisiana areas.

How does shock wave therapy work?

The process involves high-energy sound waves that travel through the soft tissue to the affected area, where it reduces inflammation, stimulates healing, and relieves pain. This tool can be especially effective for pain relief, osteoarthritis, hip or elbow dysplasia, cubathrosis, coxarthrosis, and tendon or ligament injuries.

What happens during a procedure?

Each pet is sedated for the duration of the procedure. The treatment area is shaved to prevent the fur from disrupting the sound waves, and a conductive gel is applied. The shock-wave system has a probe similar to an ultrasound, and is placed on the affected area. The procedure typically lasts 15-20 minutes, and can typically be conducted while you wait in our hospital waiting area.
