What is a Veterinary Dermatologist?

A veterinary dermatologist is a veterinarian who has completed specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of skin, hair, paw-pad and ear conditions of animals. A Veterinary Dermatologist completes at least three years of specialized training after completing veterinary school. The American College of Veterinary Dermatologists requires at least a one year internship and two year residency in order to be eligible to take boards.

Allergic Skin Disease

Allergies are extremely common in Louisiana and are one of the top reasons a patient will present to a veterinarian. Allergies can manifest in a variety of ways in our veterinary patients but some of the common signs include:

  • -Recurrent skin or ear infections
  • -Scratching/Itching/Chewing anywhere on the body
  • -Red patches on the skin, typically the underside of the patient or paws
  • -Hair Loss

The three main categories of allergic disease are flea, food and environmental disease. Our treatment plan will be formulated to identify the specific allergens that are causing your pets dermatologic disease.

We offer the gold standard for identifying your pet's specific environmental allergies; intradermal skin testing . If you believe your pet is suffering from environmental allergies, please speak with one of our Dermatology staff and we can help discuss and develop a treatment plan for your pet.

Allergy Services Available:

  • -Intradermal (skin) allergy testing
  • -Blood allergy testing
  • -Customized allergen specific immunotherapy (allergy shots)
